about

Following up one of the most refreshing releases of 2020, Christopher Port shares remix EP "Ritual Remixes", a companion to "Ritual Music", which saw Port embrace his jazz and improvisation background as a drummer to blend club sensibilities with rhythms and instrumentation from various traditions around the world.
Port has enlisted some of the finest local minds to re-interpret selections from the original.

Track one sees Allysha Joy take on “CH RGM (+234)”. Whilst the original was the most aggressive track on the EP, with a driving four to the floor, Joy has added floating vocals to soften and extend time.

For track two we get a re-work of “Tambourines of Joy” from Setwun. The original features a long, free-time intro. It’s modal, jazzy and hypnotic. Setwun’s take has retained the mesmerising feel, but added some thick bass and smoothed it out... He’s brought it into the 21st century.

The closer from Ritual Remixes sees enigmatic duo Ten Brains take on “Slid”. Years ago Port re-worked a track off their Pleasure Dome EP (when they were known as Fishing). The original is very primal, very textured. Ten Brains have zeroed in on a discordant section to open up with. It definitely has more of a club vibe, in fact it brings back memories of 90s Wild mixes.
